Good habits
A beginner's guide to building good habits.
Hi,
Yippeee!!!!
It's another Wednesday to send letters to my lovely readers and subscribers.
I do hope you were anticipating, were you?
Have you read atomic habits by James clear?
Well, I have and I'd be sharing some key things I learnt a from the book.
Before I go on, permit to commend James clear gifted hands, the best book I have read so far. If you have not read the book, I recommend for you to check it out.
Let's dive right in:
What is an habit?
An habit is a routine or behavior that is performed regularly and, in many cases, automatically.
This is where I remind you that our topic is about BUILDING GOOD HABITS. Why?
Because, it helps improve our lives and develop our personality, while bad habits on the other hand, well... does the opposite -deter us.
You're probably wondering the reason I chose this topic. I'll satisfy your curiosity.
Why Building Good Habits Is So Important:
Your Identity emerges out of your habits. Your habits shape your identity, and your identity shapes your habits.
You must have heard that; "the most practical way to change who you are is to change what you do"
If you're are looking forward to make some improvements in your life, you have to realize that you're responsible to make it happen. And a sure way to do that is to build good habits, and break bad habits. Everyday make decisions and choices that fit into the picture of the person you want to be.
Habit matters because they help you become the person you wish to be.
GOOD NEWS:
All habits are learnable. You can learn any habits you want to learn in order to become the kind of person you wish to become.
A good example:
You can become an excellent person by practising self-discipline whenever it is called for.
BAD NEWS: (Not so bad)
Bad habits are easy to form, but hard to live with. Good habits are hard to form, but easy to live with. And as Goethe said, "Everything is hard before it's easy."
HOW TO DEVELOP GOOD HABITS
1. MAKE A DECISION: The seed of every habit is a single tiny decision. You have to make a decision to no longer indulge in bad habits that deter you but instead you grow good habits that promotes you and helps you become the best version of yourself. You will decide the good habits you want to build and the things you must do to stick to it.
Never allow an exception to your new habit.
2. START SMALL: We put pressure on ourselves bro make some earth -shattering improvement that everyone will talk about.
Too often, we forget that it is easier to commit to a less tasking, stressful habit. When you decide to form an habit just to impress or for show off, it's hard to sustain such habits, the pressure you feel will make you do more tasking activities, because what you desire is not to form an habit but an impressive result to show off.
We want to build good habits, that we can be committed to and will impact our whole being.
3. HAVE A GOAL: Habits can be triggered by a goal.
Sometimes, "the intensity of the emotion that accompanies the goal you want to achieve determines the speed at which the habits would be formed".
And sometimes having a goal is not enough to sustain an habit. What do I mean?
If I have a goal to ace my examination, I understand that I would have to build a reading habit but after that period lapses, I might not been able to sustain that habit.
4. BUILD A SYSTEM: Goals are good for setting a direction but systems are best for making progress. Focus on building system that helps you stay at it.
Your systems can be: Accountability partner, reduce screen time, your circle, alarms etc.
Just make sure to build an effective system that helps you stay committed and consistent.
5. MAKE IT ATTRACTIVE: Accompany what you like with what you don't like. Combine it something you enjoy such as, listening to your favorite song while going for a run.
6. BE PATIENT: Mastery requires patience. Change can take a few years before it happens all at once.
There will be roadblocks, it's not going to be easy. If you don't encounter roadblocks, how can you tell a beautiful success story.
Be patient all through the road, and remember IT'S A PROCESS.
7. LET GO OF PERFECTION, ATTAIN EXCELLENCE:
Learning one new idea won't make you a genius, but commiting to lifelong learning can be transformative.
All habits are learnable through, constant and conscious practice and intentionality.
Ultimately, it's your commitment to the process that will determine your progress.
Some Good Habits To Cultivate:
Sleep, reading, exercise, reading well, emotional regulation, financial discipline, meditation, journaling.
It turns out a little friction can go a long way, these habits can help you perform at a much higher level in all walks of life.
What you crave is not the habit itself but the change in state it delivers.
Moving forward, what good habits would you be working on?, let me know in the comment section.
I'd also be in the comment section to answer some FAQS. I'll see you.

How To Break Bad Habits:
Say I want to stop taking Domino's,
1. Make it invisible: Stop buying it, make sure it's not within your reach or sight.
2. Make it unattractive: Connect it with an unfavorable vision of yourself in the future.
3. Make it difficult: having to go and get Domino's when you don't have it readily available for you.
4. Reframe the activity so it has negative connotations.
Ultimately, clear says, we want to:
~Increase the number of steps between us and a bad habit
~decrease the number of steps between us and a good habit.
